Language and Cultural Translation: Asymmetries in the Emergence of Modern Written Languages

Project Leaders: Judit Árokay, Jadranka Gvozdanovic
Project Members: Noriyo Hoozawa-Arkenau, Katharina Kunz, Corinna Menzer

In this project the emergence process of uniform and codified written languages was researched. The main emphasis laid on Japanese, but other languages in East Asia, e.g. Korean and/or Chinese were also considered. In all of those countries translations and/or contacts with western languages played a very important role. They caused not only social but also language-structural changes. The project investigated how the cultural and linguistic contacts developed being tied with each other.
